Shilin guangji (Chen Yuanjing)

The Chinese work Shilin guangji ( Chinese  事 林 广 记  - “Extended Report from the Realienwald”) is a popular encyclopedia or collection of miscells for everyday use. It is also known by names such as Zhongbian qunshu shilin guangji (重 编 群 书 事 林 广 记).

It was written by Chen Yuanjing (陈 元 靓) (approx. 1200–1266) in the last years of the Southern Song Dynasty , the author comes from Fujian Province .

The work is divided into the ten heavenly tribes (tiāngān 天干).

Content of the complete work

The content of the work mainly covers the areas:

  • Astronomy (tiānwén 天文),
  • Geography (dìlǐ 地理),
  • Politics and Justice (zhèngxíng 政 刑),
  • Society (shèhuì 社会),
  • Literature (wénxué 文学) and
  • Entertainment (yóuyì 游艺).

Band: drinks and food

The work contains important material for the study of the kitchen, drinks and food in the time of the Song Dynasty .

The last volume is fairly rich in material on food and beverages. Mainly these are the production of fermentation agents (qū 曲), famous spirits and fine wines (míngjiǔ 名酒 jiāniàng 佳酿), the types of preservation fu (fǔ 脯) and zha (zhǎ 鲊) for meat and fish, tea water (cháshuǐ 茶水) and snacks / Wheat flour or rice flour snacks (miàndiǎn 面 点).

Later extensions

The book was expanded in the Yuan Period and the beginning of the Ming Period. Due to the extensions it also contains important material for the time of the Yuan Dynasty .

Old prints and modern editions

The work is in the Lidai xiaohua ji (历代 笑话 集) collection, the volume devoted to drinks and food is contained in the Japanese Chugoku shokkei sosho collection.
