Circus Universal Renz was a circus of the " Circus Renz " family. It was one of the largest and oldest German circus companies and was headed by Daniel and Patricia Renz from 2001 to 2013 since it was founded. This circus was based in Friedberg in Hesse and called itself "The circus with the most exotic animals". A total of almost 70 animals belonging to the circus were brought along, including tigers, camels, horses, llamas and elephants.

The tiger dressage was for many years the opening number of the Circus Universal Renz programs and was presented by the director Daniel Renz. In 2012 the group was dissolved.

In 2013 the company filed for bankruptcy.

Criticism of keeping animals

The handling of the animals and their keeping at Circus Universal Renz has been criticized. A large number of violations of the Animal Welfare Act are documented in the keeping and handling of animals.

As early as July 1994, employees of the Nature Conservation Office in Kiel confiscated an orangutan and a Nile crocodile for which there were no valid species protection papers and whose keeping was classified as inappropriate. Renz received a fine of 500 DM. In December 2010, a fine from the Kleve district administration against Circus Universal Renz became legally binding. The Elefanten-Schutz-Europa eV association documented in February 2008 that elephants, bears and horses were given little or no exercise.

In June 2011, the brown bears from Circus Universal Renz were transferred to a bear park in the Black Forest with the support of the Friedberg Veterinary Office. Circus director Daniel Renz was no longer allowed to keep bears under Section 11 of the Animal Welfare Act after a bear was shot by the police after an outbreak in Kassel in 2009.

On February 15, 2012, the female elephant "Maya" died at Universal Renz. Maya suffered from an inflammation of the nail bed, a wound on the head, and skin problems. A few months later, the female elephant "Saida" died.
