Shimon Ben-Shlomo Hebrew שמעון בן שלמה(Born January 1, 1942 in Yemen ) is a former Israeli politician who was a member of the Knesset for the ultra-orthodox Shas party from 1984 to 1988 .

Life and Political Offices

Ben-Shlomo was born in Yemen . After Israel gained independence, his family immigrated to Israel in 1949. He attended a yeshiva in Be'er Ja'akow and then a religious teacher training college in Beth Shemesh .

In the early 1980s he joined the Shas party and ran for the 11th Knesset, which lasted from August 13, 1984 to November 21, 1988. In the elections on July 23, 1984, the party won 3.1% of the vote, making it the sixth strongest parliamentary group, receiving 4 seats and participating in the coalition government under Shimon Peres .

Ben-Shlomo has served on several committees including the Labor and Welfare Committee, the Finance Committee, and the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. His accusation of the Israeli armed forces that their losses in Lebanon were the price for their unrestrained way of life ( "were killed in Lebanon because of licentiousness in the army" ) caused national outrage.

He resigned from the parliamentary group on September 27, 1988 and was a non-attached MP until the end of the term. For the elections to the 12th Knesset on November 1, 1988, he founded his own party, the Yishai ( Hebrew ישי - יחד שבטי ישראלGerman: Isai - the united tribes of Israel), which failed with 2947 votes because of the threshold clause , which was still at one percent at the time .
