The Shiraito Waterfall ( Japanese 白 糸 の 滝 , Shiraito-no-taki ) is a waterfall in Shizuoka Prefecture in the area of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park . It has been protected as a natural monument since 1936 . Together with the Otodome waterfall ( Japanese 音 止 め の 滝 , Otodome-no-taki ), which is only a few minutes' walk away , it is on the list of the top 100 waterfalls in Japan drawn up by the Ministry of the Environment in 1990 . The name of the waterfall is derived from its appearance, so 白 ( Shira ) means “white” and 糸 ( ito ) means “thread” or “threads”. There are numerous waterfalls in Japan with the same name and similar appearance (see also the Japanese overview: 白 糸 の 滝 ).
