Shobha Gurtu
Shobha Shirodkar Gurtu (born February 8, 1925 in Belgaum , † September 27, 2004 in Mumbai ) was one of the most famous Indian singers. She sang in the North Indian Thumri style and was praised as its grande dame.
Shobha Gurtu was initially trained by her mother, Menekabai Shirodkar, who was a professional dancer. She continued her vocal studies with Ustad Ghamman Khan and Ustad Nathan Khan. She specialized in semi-classical forms such as thumri , dadra or kajri . She also named Begum Akhtar and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan as influences.
Shobha Gurtu has been a singer for more than six decades and has recorded numerous records for the Indian market. In Germany, in particular, one recording made by Walter Quintus in 1990 is available.
In 1989 she received the Sangeet Natak Academy Award . Furthermore she received the Lata Mangeshkar Puraskar , S hahu Maharaj Puraskar and the Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar . In 2002 she was honored with the Padma Bhushan .
One of her sons, Trilok Gurtu , is a well-known percussionist; it can also be heard on his albums.
