Shoelace ( English for shoelaces ) was a social network of the US company Google LLC . After the Google+ service, which wasdiscontinued in April 2019, this was Google's next attempt to set up a social network. In order not to directly scare off users again, this was initially done under the Area 120 brand.

At the end of April 2020, Area 120 announced that it would shut down the social network within 2 weeks until May 12, 2020. Google gave up the project because it could not expand beyond the borders of New York City and thus remained irrelevant as a social network globally.

concept

Although one had of course learned from the mistakes of Google+ , one orientated oneself on the concept. In contrast to, for example, Facebook and Twitter , they tried a different approach to social networks. The focus was more on bringing people together in real life. Above all, these should be new relationships and friendships, as opposed to nurturing old ones.

Access

So far the app is in a beta phase. Android and iOS device users can only join by invitation.
