The Shopping Center Alpenstrasse (SCA), now known as the Shopping Arena , is a shopping center in the south of the Austrian capital Salzburg . It opened on April 26, 1990 and was the first of its kind in town. With the two parts of the building to the left and right of the Alpine Road, it had an area of 13,000 m². An above-ground connection between the two parts of the building was originally planned, but this was not approved. Instead, an underground row of shops was built.
With the opening of the Europark in the west of the city in 1997, the importance of the SCA declined because there was a lack of space. Around the year 2000, an architectural office submitted renovation plans, but these were not implemented. In 2008 there was finally a change of ownership.
In the spring of 2011, the City of Salzburg's design advisory board approved an expansion to 24,000 m². The plans included a complete demolition of the western part of Alpenstraße 114 and a reconstruction of the eastern part. The groundbreaking took place in April 2012, the completion of the new building, estimated at 60 million euros, and the opening took place in spring 2015. In addition, there is now a multi-storey car park with 720 parking spaces.
With the reopening, the name was also changed to Shopping Arena . The naming and design of the logo and the word-image brand originate from the Bregenz company Silberball . In addition to the various branches of business, there are restaurants and other services as well as events for children and adults. The in-house customer magazine Shopping Arena Live began with the autumn 2015 issue .
