Shoryuhai

The Harvard Invitational Shoryuhai Intercollegiate Kendo Tournament , Shoryuhai for short ( Japanese 昇 竜 杯 , shōryū-hai , about "Cup of the Rising Dragon"), is a North American Kendo tournament at Harvard University . The Shoryuhai is the largest college-level kendo competition in the United States and is held annually.

history

In April 1997 the Shoryuhai was held for the first time, at that time with only 15 participants. In the following year, however, the number of participating universities tripled. Students from Harvard , Yale , Cornell , McGill , the University of Waterloo, and the University of Connecticut attended.

In 1998, the then Japanese Prime Minister Ryūtarō Hashimoto donated two trophies, one of which will remain permanently at Harvard University and the other will be awarded as a challenge cup to the respective winning university of the team competition.

In 2009, a team from Münster University took part in the tournament for the first time.

Event format

The tournament takes place in the Malkin Athletic Center (MAC) and is divided into two days, on which team and individual competitions are held.
