Shoulder pad
Shoulder pads are items of clothing that are worn under the jersey in American football , Canadian football and arena football and are part of protective equipment.
Shoulder pads were invented in the late 19th century. They initially consisted of leather and felt upholstery . From the 1980s on, people switched to plastic and foam. The six to eight pound pads were very large and restricted the players' mobility. Changes in the style of play and improved production options have increased comfort and reduced size and weight significantly. However, according to the National Football League , there was no change in the frequency of shoulder injuries. The requirements for shoulder pads vary with the player's position.
The chest protector as part of ice hockey equipment is also known as the shoulder pad .
