Shreela Flather, Baroness Flather (born February 13, 1934 in Lahore , Pakistan ) is a British Conservative Party politician who was not only the first female Hindu in British politics, but also the first woman from Asia to be raised to a life peeress .

Life

From Pakistan originating Shreela Flather began after school to study law at University College London and received after graduation in 1962 for leave to lawyer , but was later than teacher worked.

Her political career in the Conservative Party began in 1976 when she became the first woman from an ethnic minority in Great Britain to be elected to the city ​​council of Windsor and Maidenhead . In the following years she was a member of numerous committees that dealt with issues such as reform of the penal system , housing, social services and minority rights . In addition, she was a member of the Commission for Racial Equality from 1980 to 1986.

In 1986 she was elected Mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead. In 1987 she was also appointed delegate of Great Britain to the European Economic and Social Committee .

On June 11, 1990, she was raised to the Life Peeress in the Peerage of the United Kingdom with the title Baroness Flather , of Windsor and Maidenhead in the Royal County of Berkshire, and is thus a member of the House of Lords . This made her the first woman from Asia to be promoted to Life Peeress.

She is also Vice-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Humanist Group and one of the patrons of Child In Need India (CINI).
