Shuddhodana ( Sanskrit : शुद्धोदन , Śuddhodana ; Hindi also Shuddhodhan ) was the biological father of Siddhartha Gautama , the historical Buddha . He came from the Shakya people and is said to have ruled the ancient Indian state of Kapilavastu in northern India , now in Nepal . After the death of his wife Maya seven days after the prince's birth, he married her sister Mahapajapati Gotami , who became Siddhartha's foster mother. According to other traditions, the enlightened One is said to have taught his father the law of Dharma on his deathbed , which made him an arhat .
