Shyam (modern short form of Shyama ; from Sanskrit श्याम = dark, blue, black ) is a male given name , which occurs mainly in the Indian-speaking area . It is also rarely used as a female first name and family name .

The name goes back to an epithet of Krishna in Hinduism , which also occurs in the Krishna names and titles Shyamasundar, Ghanshyam, Radheshyama and rarely in Shyamcharana. The followers of the Bhakti traditions of Hinduism are sometimes referred to as "Shyamdas" (= "Servants of Shyama").
