The Siamese-Cambodian War of 1587 was a military conflict between the Kingdom of Ayutthaya ( Siam ) and the Empire of Cambodia .

prehistory

Prince Naret, who later became King Naresuan of Ayutthaya (r. 1590 to 1605), declared Ayutthaya's independence from Burma in 1584, to whom it had served as a vassal since 1569. Naret threw the Burmese occupation forces out of the country and advanced north. King Sattha also helped to strengthen his powers. During the fighting in the north, there was a confrontation between Naret and the brother of the Cambodian ruler, whereupon Naret had the Laotian prisoners impaled.

course

Horrified, Sattha then terminated the alliance with Ayutthaya, invaded Siam with troops and took the city of Prachim ( Prachinburi ). He relied on an agreement with colonial powers such as Spain in the Philippines and the Portuguese . When he could not expect any help, he withdrew again, pursued by Prince Naret, who wanted to take advantage of the weakness. The counterattack was successful and took not only Prachim but also the Cambodian towns of Battambang and Pursat until it reached the capital, Lovek . Here, however, he could not hope for a supply, so that the Siamese withdrew again.

consequences

Although the war ended without a clear winner, Prince Naret swore revenge for what he saw as the treason of the Cambodians. He made this true in the following Siamese-Cambodian War 1593–1594 .
