Siderartica was an Italian electropop / future pop band.

Band history

Siderartica was founded in 2001 as a side project of the Kirlian Camera singer Elena Alice Fossi. Fossi founded the project together with the two Kirlian camera live musicians Andrea Fossi and Andrea Savelli. Andrea Fossi is Elena's brother. The previous project was La Fille Blaisie, which released two demos in 1997.

In 2002 the first album Night Parade was released . It contained the Joy Division - Cover Atmosphere . The album was re-released in 2006. In 2003 the band played at the Festival Fields of Sunset III . A CD-R of the festival with songs by Camera Artica and Kirlian Camera was subsequently released. It was a semi-official bootleg that is also available on the official Kirlian Camera website.

In 2004 the album Shapes and Colors from the Land of God followed , which was released as a double album together with the bonus CD Toys and Robots from the Land of God . The first eight songs on the album were inspired by the soundtrack of the film Jenny (1948), which was written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Bernard Herrmann .

The project's final release was the 7 '' King Snow's Garden / Silver Surfer's Shroud .

resolution

Elena Alice Fossi decided in 2006 to radically change the line-up for May 2006. Andrea Fossi and Andrea Savelli were no longer part of the band, but the musicians Cristina Restani (electric guitar, computer), Antonella Costa (synthesizer, computer) and Cinzia Azzali (computer) joined them. Francesca Volpi and Claudia Capitani supported the musicians at the live shows. The band became an all women project.

A few months after this line-up change, the Siderartica project was finally ended because Elena Alice Fossi felt stylistically restricted and she wanted to generate something new. The new line-up was transferred to SPECTRA * Paris and continued the musical direction that had begun as Siderartica. Her debut album Dead Models Society (Young Ladies Homicide Club) was released in 2007. On July 2, 2010, the second album License To Kill was released .

Music genre

The song structures are mostly based on conventional electropop music, but there are also isolated pieces that tend towards soundscape or ambient . The singing is mostly in English, some pieces also in Italian. The track Entrance to the Factory on the debut album Night Parade is in German. The lyrics will be sung by Elena A. Fossi. On the album Shapes and Colors from the Land of God , two pieces by Carlo Dainelli, a guest singer, are also sung. The vocals are often alienated and distorted through the use of a vocoder or other effects.

The instrumentation is mostly electronic and is based on the use of synthesizers from the Roland MC-505-Groovebox brand .

The booklet specifies the electric guitar as the only other instrument (played by Andrea Fossi), the sound of which, however, has also been changed by using special effects machines. The booklet on Shapes and Colors from the Land of God lists synthesizers and the "treated guitar" as well as keyboards and vocoders among the instruments used, and sounds created purely with the computer are also part of the instrumentation. Siderartica's music is therefore purely electronic. An exception is the "Acoustic-Vision" version of their piece Arkhangel'sk , which can be found on the mini EP Fields of Sunset . This piece is based on the use of an acoustic guitar.
