Sierra Norte

Landscape of the Sierra Norte.

The Sierra Norte Mountains are located to the east of the Sierra de Aracena , north of the city of Seville ( Spanish autonomous region of Andalusia ). It is also part of the Sierra Morena . Its highest point is the Cerro de La Capitana with 960 m.

Compared to the Sierra de Aracena, it is drier here, which is why there are no longer cork oak forests , but holm oak forests . These form the dehesas that are so characteristic of the Sierra Morena : loosely standing, park-like oak forests under which pigs and cattle graze. This landscape is an example of the careful management of nature in old cultivated landscapes: the trees protect the soil from erosion and provide grazing animals with food and shade. The Sierra Norte is traversed by some rivers with typical gallery forest (so called because it accompanies both sides of the rivers like a gallery) and offers a habitat for such rare birds as the imperial eagle , black vulture and black stork .
