Signau (noble family)
The Barons von Signau were a medieval noble family from the Swiss Emmental . In addition to their regional importance, the Barons von Signau are interested as possible ancestors of the von Attinghausen-Schweinsberg, an important family when the Confederation was founded .

The barons of Signau had the castle Alt-Signau, later Neu-Signau, on the soil of today's municipality of Bowil . Goods and rights are known from the Emmental and Oberaargau. 26 people from the family are known. The family is mentioned for the first time in 1130 with Werner I von Signau in a document from the Trub monastery. Anastasia, the daughter of Ulrich III. von Signau, married Count Eberhard II von Kyburg in 1325 . Other relationships existed, among others, to the dukes of Teck , the counts of Buchegg, of Freiburg and von Fürstenberg , the barons of Grünenberg and the lords of Wartenstein and von Rüssegg.
The death of Henman von Signau in the battle of Sempach , who fought on the Austrian-Habsburg side, ended the family's history in a secular-male line in 1386. The rule finally came over the Kyburger in 1399 to Bern , which immediately passed to Johannes von Büren, burgers of the city of Bern, resold. In 1450 the castle and the lordship were sold to the von Diesbach family. Only after the Reformation did Signau finally come to Bern in 1529. The first Bernese bailiff in Signau was Niklaus von Hertenstein.
The genealogical relationship between the Signau and the Attinghausen via the von Schweinsberg family, which is repeatedly cited, is not certain; Family ties between the Schweinsberg and the Attinghausen probably existed.
