For the transport of the peat extracted and the products made from it (more than 5 million tons annually), Bord na Móna operates an extensive network of narrow-gauge railway lines such as B. the Clonmacnoise and West Offaly Railway . The network is partly permanently laid, partly as a field railway with "flying" tracks , i. H. the tracks are regularly moved there in order to follow the mining progress in the moors or to make room. With a total length of more than 2000 km, the network is larger than that of the national railway company Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) . Bord na Móna is one of the largest industrial rail operators in Europe.
