Shannonbridge ( Irish Droichead na Sionainne ) is a small town in the townland of Raghra (Irish Reachra ) in Ireland . It has 175 inhabitants (as of 2016) and is located in County Offaly on the Shannon . About ten kilometers north of Shannonbridge is the famous Clonmacnoise monastery complex .

Shannonbridge has one of the oldest bridges in Ireland still in use today. It was completed in 1757 and spans the Shannon. During the Napoleonic era , the town was heavily fortified by the British. Some sections of these fortifications on the west bank of the Shannon can still be seen today, including a fort that is now used as a restaurant.

A few kilometers downstream is the West Offaly power plant , which is heated with peat . It has an output of 125 megawatts. The peat comes from the Blackwater Bog peatlands , which can be reached by narrow-gauge railway.
