Sikh Gurus
The Sikh gurus were the first ten leaders of Sikhism , the only ones who held the title of guru ( Sanskrit , m., गुरु). The ten gurus of the Sikhs worked from 1469 to 1708.
The first was Guru Nanak , who before his death (1539) established the tradition that allowed the Guru to name his successor during his lifetime.
Gobind Singh , the tenth and last human guru, died in 1708 as a result of an assassination attempt. He had appointed the scripture Guru Granth Sahib (also known as the Ādi Granth = 'original book') as his successor and made it an eternal guru.
