Har Gobind

Har Gobind (* 1595 in Vadali Guru near Amritsar ; † 1644 ; also Har Govind ) was the sixth guru of the Sikhs . He was the only son of the fifth guru, Arjan Dev . In 1606 he became a guru after the death of his father.

Har Gobind caused the Sikhs to become increasingly militarized. On the one hand this was the result of the martyrdom of Arjun Dev, but also the increase in the rural population (especially Jats ), who had martial traditions, was one reason. The most important symbol of the Sikhs, the two swords that stand for worldly power (miri) and spiritual power (piri), was founded by Har Gobind. The Guru emphasized the balance between the worldly and the spiritual sphere.
