Silanols

Silanols are derivatives of silanes in which one or more hydroxyl groups are bonded to a silicon atom. They are the silicon analogues of the alcohols. The simplest representative is hydroxysilane with the formula H 3 Si-OH. If the molecule also contains one or more organic residues, it is an organosilanol .

Silanols are often made by the hydrolysis of halosilanes .

They are often not stable and often react spontaneously with elimination of water to form siloxanes . How hydroxysilane dimerizes rapidly to disiloxane :
