Syllables per minute

When measuring stenographic performance, one speaks of syllables per minute . The word "Bundestag President" has z. B. six syllables , the sentence “I will give you the word” eight syllables. Until the early 1990s, many final exams for office occupations required minimum stenographic performance. After initial training, between 80 and 120 syllables per minute were required , depending on the profession, and around 150 syllables per minute for advanced training degrees (e.g. secretary or stenographer ). Due to the advancement of technology (especially the introduction of the PC in offices), shorthand knowledge has become dispensable and is therefore only rarely mandatory.

Messages are spoken at an average rate of between 260 and 340 syllables per minute. Parliamentary stenographers reach speeds of up to 500 syllables per minute.
