Shorthand typist is a typist's job mainly in offices . Most of the employees working in salaried status record spoken text (e.g. business letters or contributions to discussions) in shorthand and then transfer the text into pleadings. They use typewriters and modern PC systems with appropriate word processing programs.

If necessary, call up text modules according to specifications and put them together to form standard letters. They check their completed pleadings for completeness and spelling and forward them. As far as you work on the PC, you save your work according to the respective specifications.

In English, the word typist refers to a person who writes with a machine ( English to type ). The classic stenographer is called shorthand typist there .

history

Until a few years ago, the stenotypist was considered an independent profession. Today it is usually just an additional qualification, which is usually sought by secretaries or specialist office management specialists . In the examination for stenotypists, different requirements are placed on the examinees depending on the examining chamber. Usually high writing skills in shorthand (approx. 150 syllables per minute ) and 10-finger fast typing (approx. 210 keystrokes per minute ) as well as above-average knowledge of word processing (especially design) are required.

Various educational institutions offer courses to prepare for the chamber examination.
