A hyphenation character is a character that is used to emphasize individual syllables when writing; those are shown separated from each other by the hyphenation symbol.

Hyphenation characters are mainly used in complex writing systems (such as the Tibetan script ) as well as in phonetic notation (e.g. pinyin , see pinyin hyphenation characters ).

In Western languages ​​it is used to highlight individual syllables, while the hyphen emphasizes individual parts of the word.
