Pinyin hyphenation marks
The Pinyin hyphenation mark ( Chinese 隔音 符號 / 隔音 符号 , Pinyin géyīn fúhào , English syllable-dividing mark ) is part of the Latin transcription Pinyin for Chinese. Graphically it corresponds to the apostrophe .
use
This symbol marks the syllable boundary of syllables written together if the following syllable begins with one of the vowels a, e or o . Examples: Xī'ān , Cháng'é . It serves to improve the reading fluency and to avoid ambiguities - without this symbol one reads Xian as a syllable and Change as “Chan-ge”. Such a rule is not necessary in front of the other vowels (i, u, ü) because they are written as y , w , yu at the beginning of the syllable - the y and the w therefore already mark the syllable boundary. The hyphenator is also written in front of a, e and o if there is no risk of confusion. This is how you write Xī'ān , although the two tone markers make it clear that there are two syllables, and hai'ou , although the syllable haiou does not exist in Chinese .

Both the so-called replacement character (') - a straight, vertical line, more precisely the Unicode character U + 0027 - and the so-called typographically correct apostrophe (Unicode character U + 2019) are used for its representation.
