Persifor Frazer Smith (born November 16, 1798 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , †  May 17, 1858 in Fort Leavenworth , Kansas ) was an American Army officer and military governor of California .

biography

Smith was the grandson of Persifor Frazer, a veteran of the Revolutionary War . He joined the army early on and fought in Florida during the Seminole Wars . During the Mexican-American War , he commanded a brigade that took part in the Battle of Monterrey . In September 1846 he became a brevet - Brigadier promoted. He took part in other battles in Mexico and was promoted to major general . After participating in the armistice negotiations, he became governor of Mexico City and, for a short time, military governor of California.

After the war, he was initially in command of the Department of the Pacific , which also included California. He then held a command in Texas . Smith died at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas while trying to arbitrate a dispute.
