Hyphenation marks
A hyphenation character is a character that is used to emphasize individual syllables when writing; those are shown separated from each other by the hyphenation symbol.
Hyphenation characters are mainly used in complex writing systems (such as the Tibetan script ) as well as in phonetic notation (e.g. pinyin , see pinyin hyphenation characters ).
In Western languages it is used to highlight individual syllables, while the hyphen emphasizes individual parts of the word.
Unicode defines a hyphenation point with U + 2027 (HYPHENATION POINT):‧
For texts in western languages, the optically identical center point (U + 00B7 MIDDLE DOT) is often used instead:‧
Both hyphens and hyphens are often used and referred to as hyphenation marks in everyday life, since "hyphenation" is used synonymously with " word separation "; see also: Conditional hyphen ( English soft hyphen , Unicode U + 00AD, HTML / XML & shy;)
