Silent Running is an Irish band from Belfast that was active in the 1980s and has been back in public since 2019.

Band history

The band originally consisted of singer Peter Gamble, guitarist Tony Scott, bassist Richard Collett, drummer Ian Gault and Alex White on keyboards. The debut album was released in the US as Emotional Warfare , while overseas it was called Shades of Liberty .

Silent Running appeared in Great Britain in 1984 in the opening act of Simple Minds , they also made contact with Peter Walsh, who produced Shades Of Liberty (record company: EMI).

After White left the band prior to the release of Walk on Fire , Gault soon followed suit. The band tried to gain a foothold with other members but broke up after the 1989 album Deep .

Alex White later worked as a keyboardist with the Mighty Lemon Drops, Ian Gault worked as a drum tech (including Peter Gabriel / King Crimson ), Richard Collett worked in the radio industry in Great Britain.

In 2019 Silent Running went back to the recording studio and recorded the new song "Lost Boy". A live album was recorded in Belfast in November 2019 and was also released in CD format in March 2020.

style

The style was influenced by bands like U2 and the Simple Minds . After moving to the record label Atlantic, this style was increasingly tailored to the American market with the album Walk On Fire , Deep marked the low point here, the energetic rock influences had given way to radio-grade material, the earthy and angry quality of the debut album was missing.

On the debut album, the keyboards by Alex White and the guitar work by Tony Scott are reminiscent of the style of Mick MacNeill (keys) and Charlie Burchill (guitar) from Simple Minds.
