New Years Eve III.
New Years Eve III. (previously Giovanni de 'Crescenzi Ottaviani or Johannes, Bishop of Sabina); † before October 1063; was after the expulsion of Benedict IX. elected pope on January 13 or 20, 1045 at the instigation of his patrician family, the Crescentier, who ruled Rome around the turn of the millennium .
The Crescentier party had lost its power to the Tusculans in 1012 and wanted to regain its influence with the New Year's Eve Pope. Johannes Bishop of Sabina , as Silvester was called before his papal election, seems to have accepted the election only reluctantly, as he had to assume that Benedict still had a large following. Other sources report New Year III. bought his office.
In fact, at the Synod of Sutri, which began on December 20, 1046, New Year's Eve was declared an "intruder" by the Tusculans' party, deposed on December 24 and sentenced to monastery imprisonment.
However, the conviction seems to have been overturned because he administered his diocese of Sabina until his death.
From various sources, New Year III. referred to as both legitimate pope and antipope . A precise clarification of the legitimacy of his pontificate is not possible.
