Silvia Hansen-Schirra

Silvia Hansen-Schirra (* 1975 in Zell (Mosel) ) is a German linguist and translation scholar . She is a university professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), Department of Translation, Linguistics and Cultural Studies (FTSK) in Germersheim .

Life

From 1996 to 1999 Hansen-Schirra studied translation (English and French, minor in economics) at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken. From 1999 to 2004 she worked there as a research assistant for the fields of applied linguistics, computational linguistics, and translation and interpreting. 2002 doctorate it in Applied Linguistics with a book on The Nature of Translated Text - An Interdisciplinary Methodology of the Investigation of the Specific Properties of Translations. In 2006 she was a lecturer in English at the University of Trier . In 2007, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz appointed her junior professor for Computational Linguistics in the Department of Translation, Linguistics and Cultural Studies in Germersheim. In 2009 she received the Venia Legendi for applied linguistics and corpus linguistics from the Saarland University . Since 2010 she has been university professor for English linguistics and translation studies in the department of translation, linguistics and cultural studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Since May 26, 2014, Hansen-Schirra has been a member of the Gutenberg Research College (GFK), which has been promoting cutting-edge research at the Johannes Gutenberg University since 2007.

In the field of translation, the linguist mainly conducts corpus-based and cognitive research studies. In the already completed DFG project Linguistic Properties of Translations - a corpus-based study for the English-German language pair , she compared translations with originals in the source and target languages. In the sub-project Variation in Translation as part of the JGU research focus Determinants of linguistic variation , in addition to translations in general, the translational influence on the German and English target language and culture in particular is to be researched. For this and other empirical studies of translation processes and text understandability, Hansen-Schirra set up an eye-tracking laboratory in Germersheim.
