The Simon-Juda-Markt in Werne , known for a long time by the residents, traders and foreign visitors just Sim-Jü , is the oldest and largest festival on the Lippe .

history

As early as 1362, Bishop Adolf von Münster confirmed to his border fortress Werne the right to hold a free market at Simon and Judah (October 28). Originally intended for the trade of the rural population, for craftsmen and merchants, this open market quickly attracted minstrels and jugglers, the early showmen . From 1608, a previously existing cattle market was also affiliated.

With up to 300,000 visitors annually on the four days of the event, Sim-Jü is now one of the most important inner-city fairgrounds in Germany and the largest festival on the Lippe. The following places in the city center are built annually: Hagen, Marktplatz, Kurt-Schumacher-Platz, Kurt-Schumacher-Straße car park and the corresponding connecting streets. There are up to 220 showman companies, including around 30 rides for big and small, present.

In 2012 the 650th anniversary of the Simon Juda Market was celebrated. In fact, the Werner Freimarkt is likely to be much older. Because in the confirmation document from 1362, to which the Werner have been referring to the age of the market for years, a passage reads: "... The free kermisse that is there...".

Program Sequence

On the fourth Sunday in October, from Saturday to Tuesday, everything in Werne revolves around Sim-Jü. After the Werner are attuned to Sim_Jü on the Saturday of the fair at 12 noon by ringing the bells of St. Christophorus, the historical free flag is hoisted at 2:00 p.m. on the Werner market square. The fifth season of Werner begins. The shops of the retailers are generally open on Sundays. On the Monday of the fair after 9 p.m. there is traditionally a large brilliant fireworks display. The final Tuesday with its “stuff and cattle market” reminds of the origin of the Simon Juda Market. Around 150 “ flying dealers ” and tens of thousands of visitors enliven the areas of the city center that are not used by the fair with additional hustle and bustle.
