Simon Portius (grammarian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Simon Portius , also with the surname Romanus ( Italian Simone Porzio , Greek Σίμων Πόρκιος Ρωμάνος Símon Pórkios Romános , 17th century ) was a Greek grammarian .

Apart from the fact that in 1638 he published a grammar of Modern Greek in Latin, little is known about Simon Portius. From the dedication letter he addressed to Cardinal Richelieu , it can be concluded that he was a Catholic Greek who wanted to give his fellow believers an instrument for mission and to make his language known in the West. Wilhelm Meyer-Lübke (1861–1936) founded the historical research of modern Greek grammar by publishing this work .
