Simon Yates (climber)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Simon Yates (* 1963 in Leicestershire ) is a British extreme mountaineer .

In 1985 he succeeded in the first ascent of Siula Grande , located in the Peruvian Andes , over the west side. His companion Joe Simpson had a serious accident during the descent, during a rescue attempt and poor weather conditions, Simpson was unintentionally rappelled over an overhanging ice cliff by his rope partner Yates. To save his own life, Yates cut the rope because he was about to fall with Simpson. Simpson fell into a crevasse , was believed dead by Yates and left behind. Joe Simpson survived the crash, however, and made his way to base camp on his own.

Joe Simpson described his experiences in his book Fall Into Void . Simpson and Yates both have their say in the film adaptation of the book. As a result of the events, Yates was nicknamed "the guy who cut the rope" and had a bad reputation in parts of the mountaineering scene. However, Simpson never blamed Yates for “cutting off” him because it was objectively the right decision.
