The Siula Grande is a mountain in the Cordillera Huayhuash in the Peruvian Andes . It is 6,344  m high and lies on the watershed between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans .

The summit was first climbed on July 28, 1936 by the two Austrians Arnold Awerzger and Erwin Schneider via the north ridge.

Further routes were opened by the following ascents:

  • 1985: West Face by Joe Simpson and Simon Yates (narration of the ascent and the subsequent dramatic descent in the 1988 book Sturz ins Leere and in the 2003 film documentary of the same name )
  • 1999: Peru West Face Avoiding The Touch (new way) by Carlos Buhler
  • July 17, 2001: Noches de "Juerga" , west face
  • July 3, 2002: Northeast Face, Los Rapidos by Marjan Kovac and Pavle Kozjek
