Simon ben Boethos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Simon ben Boethos was a high priest at the Jerusalem temple. He officiated from about 24/22 BC. BC to 5 BC Chr.

Simon came from a respected family of priests who lived in Jerusalem; his father Boethos, however, came from Alexandria . According to Josephus, Simon was appointed high priest by Herod in order to qualify him as a father-in-law by raising his status. Herod intended to take his daughter Mariamne as his wife.

Simon's long term in office coincides with the construction of the Herodian Temple , an achievement that Josephus hides.
