Simple green
Simple Green is a brand name under which Sunshine Makers Inc. has been producing concentrated cleaners and degreasers since 1972 and selling them worldwide.
Simple Green was also the name of the first product that was originally developed for the food industry. It was advertised as environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and biodegradable. In the 2000s, the ingredient ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (2-butoxyethanol) was viewed more critically, as it contains less than 5%.
Use in the USA
Simple Green has been listed in the USA by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) since 1990 in the "National Contingency Plan" as a cleaner for removing oil pollution. Investigations by the EPA with Menidia beryllina ( New World earfish ) and Mysidopsis bahia in an oil-water mixture and an oil-water mixture with 10% Simple Green have shown that the survival rate in the mixture with Simple Green (LC50 8.30ppm-96hrs and 4.40 ppm-48hrs) is higher than in the mixture without Simple Green (LC50 6.50-96hrs and 3.70ppm-48hrs).
Simple Green has also been used in the bioremediation of contaminated soils.
Simple Green in Europe
Simple Green is sold worldwide and local distributors take care of sales in Europe.
While Simple Green is offered in the USA especially to private customers, this market is not fully developed in Europe. The Extreme Simple Green range has been developed for industrial applications.
