The Symphonic Wind Orchestra Ulm is an independent and independent national wind orchestra from Ulm (Danube).

history

The SBU was founded at the end of 1992 under the musical direction of Kreso Pascuttini and the sponsorship of the Ulmer Jugendblasorchester Ulmer Knabenmusik- ukm founded. The aim was to provide a catch basin for musicians who had to retire from the ukm for reasons of age and for whom there was no corresponding orchestra in the region. The Ulm Symphonic Wind Orchestra was also open to all musicians in the region interested in high-class symphonic wind music from the very beginning. The first public concert took place on May 9, 1993 in the Ulmer Kornhaus together with the Symphonic Orchestra of the Ulmer Knabenmusik. At the beginning of 1994, the Ulm Symphony Orchestra went into business for itself and comprised around fifty musicians from all over southern Germany in the two work phases I / 96 and II / 96 under the direction of the internationally active conductor Douglas Bostock. For legal and organizational reasons, the SBU has been a registered non-profit association since the beginning of 1997.

Working method

The musical work takes place in two working phases per year, each consisting of several rehearsal phases (weekends) and one or more concluding concerts. The SBU itself does not offer instrumental lessons for the members of the orchestra. Due to the division of work into rehearsal phases and the lack of instrumental lessons for the members, the Ulm Symphonic Wind Orchestra does not see itself as competition to regularly rehearsing wind orchestras in the region, but as an additional and complementary offer for ambitious musicians from these orchestras who develop through their participation in the SBU and their orchestras be able to pass on valuable musical suggestions.

Conductors

After the death of the founding conductor Kreso Pascuttini, the direction of the Ulm Symphonic Wind Orchestra was taken over in 1996 by the internationally active conductor Douglas Bostock (including Tōkyō Kōsei Wind Orchestra , Aargau Symphony Orchestra ).

Soloists

In addition to soloists from our own ranks, internationally recognized soloists also regularly perform at the concerts of the SBU. The orchestra has given several concerts with the Italian pianist Antonio Piricone and the Danish drummer Mikel Ibb.

Works

The orchestra's repertoire now includes almost all of the great original works of symphonic wind music. Again and again, the focus is on several concerts with works by individual composers (e.g. Malcolm Arnold , Joseph Horovitz ). In addition, the orchestra repeatedly presents works from Asia and Japan that are little known in Europe and the Western world. The SBU is also responsible for a number of first and world premieres.
