The Sint-Martinuskerk is a former Roman Catholic church on the Oudegracht in the southern inner city of Utrecht in the Netherlands . The neo-Gothic building was converted into a residential complex in the 1980s.

history

The church on the Utrecht Oudegracht was built between 1899 and 1901 by the Dutch architect Alfred Tepe . Due to the declining number of church attendants and the close proximity to the St. Catherine Cathedral , St. Martin was profaned in 1974 . After that it stood empty for years and was used as a backdrop for a Dutch television series. The church building was not sold to potential users for a long time, as the parish insisted on the preservation of the old, listed buildings. In the 1980s, Dutch architect Dolf de Maar acquired the church and redesigned it to accommodate 29 apartments that were sold as condominiums.

The neo-Gothic interior of the church was sold to the church in Loo after the church was closed , which was also designed by Tepe. The altar found its new place in the chapel of 2010 closed diocesan - Seminary Ariënskonvikt . The stained glass on the windows went to St. Martin's Church in Makkum.

Surroundings

In the square in front of the church there has been an equestrian statue of St. Martin by Albert Termote since 1948 as a reminder of the Second World War . On the square is the former rectory from the time the church was built, as well as a covered bicycle parking space from 1948.
