The Sint Paulusabdij (German: St. Paul's Abbey ) was a Benedictine - Abbey in the Dutch city of Utrecht in the same province .

history

The Utrecht Abbey goes back to a monastery founded by Bishop Ansfried around 1000 in Hohorst near Leusden . Around 1020 the community adopted the Rule of Benedict . Under Bishop Bernold , the convent was relocated to Utrecht in the first half of the 11th century and settled south of the cathedral . The abbey church, which is subordinate to St. Paul the Apostle , was consecrated on June 26, 1050. The church was architecturally closely related to the Pieterskerk in Utrecht . It was a Romanesque, three-aisled pillar basilica made of tuff stone with a western two-tower facade. In the course of the Reformation , the Paulus Abbey was closed in 1580. The church was handed over to the Protestant chapter of Sint Salvator in 1595 , whose own church was demolished in 1587. However, this could not save the sacred building in the long term. Most of the nave was closed in 1707, followed by the choir in 1804 . A transept wall on the street Hofpoort has remained visible.
