Sisi Khampepe

Sisi Khampepe (born January 8, 1957 in Soweto ) is a South African lawyer and a judge at the Constitutional Court of the Republic of South Africa since 2009 .

Life

After completing her studies at the University of Zululand in 1980, she studied at Harvard Law School , where she graduated in 1982 with a Master of Laws (LLM) degree .

She began her career with the Industrial Aid Society , where she worked as a legal advisor from 1979 to 1980. From 1981 to 1983 Sisi Khampepe was at the Legal Resources Center . From 1983 she worked for the law firm Bowman Gilfillan Attorneys and, after her admission as attorney , founded her own law firm in 1985, which operated under the name SV Khampepe Attorneys . The firm mainly dealt with legal disputes in the field of labor law , but also represented civil rights organizations and trade unions . Her law firm was one of the few black labor law firms in South Africa.

Nelson Mandela proposed her to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1995 , where she was a member of the Amnesties Committee from 1996 . From 1998 to 1999 she was deputy head of the Public Prosecution Department in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Development. In 2000 she was appointed judge at the High Court. In 2004 she was posted to Zimbabwe and 2006 to Uganda as an election observer. From 2005 to 2006 she was the chairwoman of the commission of inquiry appointed by Thabo Mbeki to clarify the role and mandate of the Directorate of Special Operations (DSO), the so-called Khampepe Commission . In 2007 she was appointed judge at the Court of Appeal for Labor Law. In October 2009 she was appointed constitutional judge.
