The Waterloo Bridge is a road bridge over the Conwy at Betws-y-Coed in north Wales . It was built in 1815 as part of the expansion of the road between London and Holyhead (now A5) according to plans by Thomas Telford . Its name recalls the Battle of Waterloo that same year.
The bridge consists of five parallel cast iron arches with a 32 m span and a distance of 1.5 m between each other. The cast-iron deck slab is above it. In 1923 the bridge was reinforced by a laterally cantilevered reinforced concrete slab in order to widen the roadway and to be able to arrange additional footpaths. In addition, the inner three arches were sheathed with reinforced concrete. Further reinforcement was required in 1978.
