Sissieretta Jones
Matilda Sissieretta Joyner Jones (1868 or 1869 in Portsmouth , Virginia - June 24, 1933 ) was an American opera singer (soprano).
Life
Jones' mother sang in the choir of a nearby Baptist church; her father was a carpenter and pastor who was born into slavery. The family moved to Providence, Rhode Island, where young Sissierette sang in church and began her vocal training. Her marriage to David Jones ended in divorce; her daughter Mabel died at the age of 2.
In 1893, Jones became the first African American woman to give a concert on Carnegie Hall's main stage .
