The Sitscher Riflemen ( Ukrainian Січові Стрільці Sitschowi Strilzi , Polish Strzelcy Siczowi ) were a regular military unit of the Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic . The unit was in service from 1917 to 1919 and was made up of Ukrainian soldiers from the Austro-Hungarian army , local recruits and former commanders of the Ukrainian Sitscher rifles from Galicia . The Sitscher riflemen reached a number of up to 25,000 men, including artillery, cavalry, reconnaissance and machine gun units.

The name goes back to the Sitsch , the name of the fortified camp of the Zaporozhian Cossacks .
