Face of the sea monster

Sjöguden is the name of a sculpture in the Gamla stan district of Stockholm in Sweden .

location

It is located in the southern part of Skeppsbron , the quay in Stockholm's old town, not far from the Räntmästartrappan jetty , just a few meters from the shore.

Design and history

The sculpture was created by the sculptor Carl Milles in 1913 , but was not installed in its current location until 1930. Milles planned a total of ten such sculptures, which would be placed along the quay wall and used to moor ships. However, Sjöguden was the only sculpture that was actually implemented by this project.

The sculpture , which has a very smooth surface structure, shows a smiling sea monster that is hugging a mermaid . Red granite was used as the material for the sculpture itself . The 1.80 meter high, 1.10 meter wide and 1.10 meter deep figure stands on a 0.5 meter high base made of black granite, with a base area of about 1.30 by 1.30 meters. Rings for attaching ship ropes are embedded on the side edges of the base.

When designing this sculpture, Milles was inspired by German influences. It was the last sculpture by the artist in which he used such smooth surfaces.
