Skáldatal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Skáldatal is a skaldic directory that is in a single manuscript (DG 11) of the Snorra Edda and another of the Heimskringla (AM 761, 4to) and can only be counted as part of the Snorra Edda in this sense.

The text consists of a list of skalds, which is arranged chronologically, and which ranges from the naming of legendary poets to around 1300 . The abovementioned skalds are also well known from other sources. Seals of some of the skalds mentioned here have survived, especially price songs that they wrote for their princes. But the list of skáldatal is not complete, as more Skaldendichtungen are known, the authors of which are not mentioned in the skáldatal.
