Skagen Vippefyr ( German  Wippfeuer ) was a beacon in Skagen on the Danish island of Vendsyssel-Thy .

The original “ Vippefyr ”, the first of its kind in Denmark, was built in 1627. In the same place today stands a true-to-original copy that Carl Locher built in 1913 for the 500th anniversary of Skagen and restored in 1958.

The rocking fire replaced a former so-called papegøjefyr ( German  parrot fire ) and was in operation until 1747 when the white lighthouse was put into operation.

description

A massive iron basket filled with firewood hangs at one end of the seesaw. This was lit and the basket with the seesaw was pulled up. The problem was that the wood easily set fire to the beam structure of the rocker frame. That is why they quickly switched to charcoal , which did not flare up so high.

The rocking fire only burned from March to November, as there was hardly any shipping due to severe storms in the winter months. The rocker was helpful, but the range was very limited. In addition, there was not enough fuel on Skagen for the rocking fire.

Parrot fire

Skagen's very first lighthouse was a parrot fire, built in 1561 on the orders of King Frederick II on June 8, 1560. He ordered beacons to be erected in Skagen, Anholt and Kullen . Nobody knows what the parrot fires looked like, but they were probably a forerunner of the rocker fire. Skagen's first parrot fire was quickly replaced by a lantern with an oil lamp. This was washed into the sea and had to be rebuilt.

Jens Pedersen Grove invented the rocker fire, which was in use for over 100 years. Today the seesaw fire is lit for tourists on midsummer night.
