Skeppsmalen

Skeppsmalen (also Skeppsmaln ) is an old fishing village in the Swedish municipality of Örnsköldsvik . It is located on the Gulf of Bothnia , at the beginning of Örnsköldsviksfjärden, and was founded by Gävle fishermen .

In the area around today's Skeppsmalen, the foundations of simple dwellings from the Vendel and Viking ages and the late Middle Ages were found during archaeological investigations . Seal bones and charcoal were also found, and the foundations from different eras indicate that the area was inhabited several times for a long time.

More recently, Gävle fishermen have been fishing in the village of Skagen, a few kilometers north, at least since the end of the 17th century.

Skeppsmalen was first mentioned in a document in 1780, 16 fishermen lived there with their families. The village chapel was built between 1795 and 1803, and a bell was bought jointly by the fishermen in 1801. Long-distance trips continued until the end of the 19th century, the last Gävle fisherman was Erik Wilhelm Högberg. From 1900 until his death in 1914 he took a steamboat to Skeppsmalen every year and fished there over the summer. Högberg came from an old fishing family from Gävler who drove to Skeppsmalen for several generations.

In 1957 the lighthouse Skags fyr was built near Skeppsmalen, here is also a pilot station and one of the measuring stations of the SMHI . Around ten people live all year round in the place, which is visited by tourists in summer. Opened in 2004 Fiskevistet is the only the Surströmming museum dedicated to Swedish.
