Skip Ewing
Donald Ralph "Skip" Ewing (born March 6, 1964 in Redlands , California ) is an American country singer and songwriter .
Beginnings
As the son of a naval officer, Donald Ralph Ewing was given the nickname "Skip", derived from "Skipper", in his early childhood. His enthusiasm for country music was sparked by the songs of Merle Haggard and Lefty Frizzell . He could play the guitar rather than read and write, and wrote his first song at the age of ten. After finishing school, he made his first appearances in an amusement park in Virginia . At the age of 19 he moved to Nashville , where he played famous country musicians in the Opryland .
Career
Like many other country musicians before him, Skip Ewing started out as a songwriter. He proved so talented that he was signed to the leading local music publisher, Acuff-Rose Music . After a short time, his songs were interpreted by established stars such as George Jones and Charley Pride . In 1987 the up-and-coming young musician received a record deal with MCA. A year later the album The Coast Of Colorado was recorded. It was produced by Jimmy Bowen and Skip Ewing himself, who also composed all the songs. In contrast to other singing songwriters, he had a very pleasant sounding voice. Several singles were released from the debut CD. Burnin 'A Hole In My Heart reached number three on the country charts. The good-looking musical all-rounder had made the breakthrough.
His next CD, The Will To Love , was equally successful. Further albums followed at longer intervals. However, good hit parade placements were the exception. Ewing was all the more successful as a songwriter. He composed more than a dozen number 1 hits in total. To date, more than 250 of his songs have been recorded by almost all of the greats on the country scene. In 1991 he moved to the Capitol Label together with Jimmy Bowen.
