Slaven potpourri

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Slaven Potpourri is a composition by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 39). It was performed for the first time on March 27, 1847 in the Tanzlokal zum Sperl in Vienna.

Remarks

The work was composed for the Slavic minority among the residents of Vienna and was performed at one of their balls. The composer put the work together from musical themes from the entire area of the Slavic-speaking area and had great success with the Slavs. In the autumn of 1847 Johann Strauss took this work with him on his trip to the Balkans, where it was also very well received. However, the piece did not go down well with the local population of Vienna. The background was the incipient national tensions in the Habsburg Empire. As a result, the work was hardly played. Except for the final march, the sheet music for the CD recording mentioned below was still available in the archives. Therefore, this march probably had to be re-orchestrated for Gustav Fischer's CD recording based on the piano reduction.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 16 minutes and 32 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
