New Styrian dances

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neue Steirische Tänze is a composition by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 61). It was first performed on December 26, 1848.

Remarks

The work consists of four dances, some of which consist of motifs from Styria and others of themes created by Strauss. The first three dances are still in the original orchestral version. The fourth part was re-orchestrated by Christian Pollack for the CD recording mentioned below based on the piano reduction. It remains unknown why the composer used Styrian motifs of all things and where exactly the work was premiered.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 6 minutes and 47 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
